A stone outbuilding transformed into a small house | Bruno Erpicum
This stone outbuilding in Belgium became a small house with the addition of a steel and glass pavilion. The owners asked Atelier d’Architecture Bruno Erpicum & Partners to transform it into living space, but it was clearly too small to house the desired functions without expanding the floor plan.
Just as an earlier addition to the original stone building was built of brick, the architect wanted to set off the new construction with different materials. Contrasting the solid, closed appearance of the earlier work, the new sitting room pavilion is almost delicate-looking. To integrate the old and new parts of the house, the pavilion’s steel roof plate was extended into the building as the loft floor.
Steel was used as a theme throughout the design with the plate metal being used in various places including the staircase, the bathtub surround and the bed’s headboard.
