This small studio was born of the client’s wish for a quiet retreat surrounded by nature in which to cherish the memories of his wife and the life they shared. The structure was placed among rock outcrops at the back of the owner’s property, still partly visible from the main residence yet worlds away.

Workshop/apd designed the 300 ft2 (27.9 m2) retreat as a modern geometric form that nonetheless fits in with the trees and rocks. The dark ipe wood and black metal cladding materials help blend the structure into the woods.

A geometric grid of windows fills the western façade, with hefty vertical and horizontal mullions arranged to look like an abstract representation of tree branches. From the inside, the mullions frame multiple views of the forest. Walnut was used extensively on the interior to reflect the natural surroundings.

Designed primarily for day use, the small studio is equipped with a bathroom but does not have cooking facilities. However I’m sure you can all imagine the possibilities for adding a kitchenette and a Murphy bed or other sleeping arrangements that would make this into an ideal tiny house.

Have a nice weekend!
