Stunning pyramid cottage in Iceland
Last week we looked at two vacation homes inspired by Iceland’s traditional turf houses. Today we have another vacation cottage located in the same area, on an ancient lava field, but in this case the architect seems to have been inspired by Iceland’s volcanoes.
The cottage has a symmetrical design consisting of two steep-sided pyramids positioned corner to corner. The pyramids are joined by a single-storey entrance hall. One pyramid is the open living space with kitchen, sitting and dining areas. Triangular corner windows mirror the room’s shape.
The other pyramid is the sleeping wing. Three very small bedrooms and the bathroom are located on the lower level. Two of the bedrooms have twin beds while the third has a child-sized bed. In addition, an alternating tread stair brings you up to a loft at the peak. While the living space pyramid has glass corners, the bedroom one has a glass top. The 360 degree view makes the loft an ideal spot for taking in the Northern Lights.
The pyramid cottage is about an hour and a half drive from Reykjavík. It is located in the middle of Iceland’s famed Golden Circle Route, putting the Geysir and Strokkur geysers, Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park within easy reach. The cottage can be rented through Airbnb. Enjoy the photos!
