Living on the water in Prague | Mjölk Architekti

The owner of this floating home in Prague wanted to live close to the amenities of the city center. However, like many other young people, he found the typical downtown housing to be priced out of reach. Rather than moving further out, he bought an old float house in a small floating home community on Prague’s Vltava River and had it renovated into a modern home.

Mjölk Architekti redesigned the home, giving it a contemporary look. The float house has a 36 m² (387 ft²) main level living space with a bedroom loft covering about half that. New shelves and cabinetry line the sidewalls, with cooking facilities on one side and entertainment plus a window seat on the other. A set of French doors with flanking sidelights opens to the deck and a nice view of the river. The bedroom is reached by a ladder from the living area, although the ladder was removed for these photos.

A stacked washer and dryer were incorporated into the bathroom, at the back under the loft. Switching around the usual order of the bathroom fixtures, the architect put the shower in the middle and the toilet at the end, hidden behind a partition wall. That left less room in the main part of the bathroom, but a glass-walled shower with doors that slide open from the corner keeps it from feeling cramped.
