A small beach house on a Caribbean island
If you’re in a part of the world where the cold of winter has set in, you might be longing for a tropical island paradise. Casita del Caribe is located on Utila, an island in the western Caribbean 30 miles off the coast of Honduras. This appealing beach cottage sits within 150′ of a sandy shoreline, surrounded by coconut palms, almond and banana trees.

The cottage has 442 ft2 (41 m2) of interior living space, plus a small laundry room at ground level. There is also a large screened-in veranda on the beach side of the cottage, with access from both the living room and the bedroom. We would have preferred to keep the interior more open, and we would have omitted some of the walls enclosing the kitchen, seen below.
Of course even the Caribbean does get its own brand of bad weather from time to time, hence the need to elevate the cottage on 8′ concrete piers for protection from hurricane surges.
