Our friends at Apartment Therapy hold an annual Small Cool Home contest, inviting readers to submit photos and a written description of their own small homes. The 2010 winner of the “Teeny Tiny” division, encompassing homes up to 400 ft2 (37.2 m2), was Beth. She makes her home in the gem of a cottage pictured here.

Beth’s small cottage is surrounded by lush gardens in the hills of Sausalito, California. Built sometime in the 1930’s, the tiny cottage has just 365 ft2 (33.9 m2), smaller than most two-car garages. Yet, it doesn’t seem that small. While the kitchen is indeed cramped, the rest of the house appears quite comfortable.

Beth has made the space look larger by using glass-topped tables and white upholstered pieces that recede visually, but balanced them with bright bold colors in the artwork and accessories.
