An old-timer cabin has gained a new life as a breezy beach cottage on Camano Island in Washington’s Puget Sound. It was originally built in the 1940s as a fishing cabin on the island’s Tyee Beach. A major renovation in 2005 added cedar shingle siding, a wood deck bigger than the cottage itself, new windows and doors, and a completely revamped interior in vintage beach cottage style.

The seaside cottage has a studio floor plan of just 336 ft2 (31.2 m2), and we estimate its dimensions to be 12′ by 28′. With the bathroom at one end taking up about 5′ of that length, it means that the kitchen, the living and dining areas, and the bedroom all have to fit within a space the size of a typical single-car garage.

It helps the livability immensely that almost one entire wall opens up to the outdoors and the water views. No less than five glass doors swing out, drawing the occupants out onto the partly-covered deck. Even when it is too cold to leave the doors open, it would be hard to feel confined with such expansive views. The bathroom gets a fantastic view too with a large window coming right down to the edge of the jetted tub.

The renovation raised the ceiling to the rafters, removing the feeling of an overhead boundary as well. That also created a crawl-in loft over the bathroom. Although, with little headroom and no window or skylights, it doesn’t seem like a very inviting place to sleep. Other than that, the cottage is bright and cheerful with tall painted wainscoting, hardwood and travertine tile flooring, and wood countertops on white kitchen cabinetry.
